Liyang is a Chinese-Canadian architect and artist living in Brooklyn, New York.
Her work is born out of her play with materials, proportion, time, and light; often, forms emerge from the inherent qualities of specific materials in conversation with her hands.

A Dialogue Between
A loss of control by the hand against clay typically forms undesirable outcomes. Here, the hand and the medium are equal actors in an improvisation where the result is left uncensored. A series of actions and reactions-pushes and pulls-become a memory of the dialogue preserved in its form.
The records of these dialogues reveal moments of slow and swift hand motions, against the stiffness and softness of clay. At times, the clay is pushed beyond its limits and pushes back or gives in. At other times, the hand and the medium achieve perfect harmony.

The Curtain Sconce
features a curtain as an analogue dimmer to adjust brightness and ambiance. The ceramic body is rough and raw like stone freckled with moss, its robust geometry balanced with the rhythmic billow of the canvas curtain. The ceramic balls are pulled along the track of the ceramic body to gather or unfurl the curtains.
